Must order Martinis
So I don't actually really like gin but took a taste of their Vesper martini, which has gin in it. It's making my mouth water as I type this. Smooth, subtle and perfect. Only better probably with a steak. Thank goodness you can order one of those here two. The menu is a steak lovers dream with the most popular menu item being the Beef Wellington. That shouldn't surprise you, right?

The other martini I had was the Cucumber & Goose. Grey Goose, fresh cucumber, mint, lemon juice, eucalyptus infused syrup. It's something you'd want to drink at a spa. Or a spa in a glass. So good. Goes down a little too easily, if you know what I mean.

I love the fabric walls, leather and crystal chandeliers. The ambiance is super cozy. Another place, my husband would love! It would be awesome for a date night.

Steak and Martini Lounge
This is the smallest high scale restaurant I've ever been to. The restaurant can handle up to 35 guests, which makes this place feel very exclusive. As you enter, you'll see one of the walls covered floor to ceiling with mirrors making it look bigger, but once you get used to the effect you can tell how small it is.

The ambiance feels luxurious with fabric padded walls, big artwork and beautiful chandeliers; yet it also feels comfortable. Because of the size I would highly recommend making reservations and if you go to their website, you'll see the current specials, like $38 for a 3 course beef wellington meal on Sundays.

Their main focus are Steaks and Martinis, of which I tried the Cucumber & Goose Martini, one of their signature drinks. Very good!

This is the perfect place for an intimate dinner with your loved ones.

Great atmosphere and amazing drinks
This place is a great steak and martini spot. Right up my alley actually. Once you step inside it's small but elegant, the atmosphere is comfortable yet still has an element of luxury about it. They pour great traditional and original martini's. They also serve a ton of perfect martini accompaniments , Steaks! I will definitely be back.

Prepare yourself for some strong drinking
Came to the Wellington for a VIP event...

I got to sample both signature cocktails: the Cucumber and Good Martini and the Vesper.

AND BOTH WERE STRONG! Wowza! Not sure if it was my cup of tea... or rather my martini glass of ...martini? That doesn't make any sense. Anyways, it was certainly no appletini!

Aside from that, the atmosphere was very dark and gentlemen's loungey. i LOVED IT. It was a throw back to the Mad Men era in a good well. I didn't get a chance to sample any food from this place but I got to meet the Chef and he was a delight. Plus, the service was superb. I was hoping to watch them make it but of course, i didn't mind just drinking some!

I'll have to come back here for a beef wellington. After all, the place is called the Wellington!

The Wellington & Martini Lounge

A puff pastry emerges, still glowing from the oven, as a fragrant warm aroma rises off the golden brown flakey dough. Cutting inside the rich earthy odor of cremini mushroom duxelle escapes, and an bright, pink, perfectly cooked medium filet mignon is exposed inside. Served with asparagus al dente and coated with a simple Madeira-mushroom sauce, the signature and namesake dish of The Wellington is a rare treasure for the palette.

Nestled next door to each other, The Red Door and The Wellington opened in 2009 in Mission Hills. With very different themes and menus, you wouldn't guess that both are owned and operated by Trish Watlington and her family.

Growing up in an Italian family, Trish has always been in love with good food. When they open the restaurant, Trish hired Brian Johnson, who has over 25 years of San Diego restaurant experience, as head chef and general manager for both businesses. Her daughter Sarah designed the spaces after being inspired by a trip to England, and Trish's son manages The Red Door.

Collaborating on the menu, the idea was to make familiar comfort foods, but to elevate them with fresh and gourmet ingredients. Using his training as a classical French chef, popular dessert items like chocolate pudding are transformed into chocolate pots de creme; a simple combination of sugar, egg yolk, chocolate, and heavy creme, but possessing a firm texture and dark rich taste much more complex than the sum of its parts.

Using local and fresh ingredients, the contemporary comfort food is served in very different settings. The red Door, the first restaurant they opened in July of 2009 has rustic French countryside feel. With large windows a light colors, the decor creates a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere perfect for an afternoon lunch or early dinner looking out onto the bustling main street of the boutique neighborhood.
